Autism (also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder and ASD), is a developmental delay/disability caused by differences in the brain. Autism displays a broad range of characteristics and conditions, some of which include challenges with: communication, social skills and repetitive patterns of behavior.
Signs of Autism can usually be seen by age 2 or 3. diagnosed as early as 18 months, but most children with autism will not be diagnosed until age 2-3. However, some children are diagnosed with ASD as early as 18 months while others may not receive a diagnosis until they are way older. Recognizing the signs of Autism and receiving an early diagnosis plays a huge and important role to ensure children have the necessary services and support for reach their full potential.
Common Signs to be Aware of Include for Any Age:
-Repetitive Behaviors (hand flapping, lining up toys, spinning, etc.)
- Limited to no eye contact/avoidance of eye contact
- Delayed language development (little to no communication, loss of previously learned communication, including babbling, speech and social skills)
- Restricted interests
- Resistance to change
- Difficulties understanding other people's feelings and non-verbal communication
- Preference of playing/being alone
- Unusual or extreme reactions to: smells, sounds, touch, textures, tastes, lights/colors.
